The Surgeon’s philosophy and principle
Since the day I chose plastic surgery as my specialty, I have maintained a keen interest in observing the human face. By doing so during my residency and the days obtaining my Ph.D., I concluded that the human face is as variable and diverse as the persons behind it.
As the sketches that I drew to plan surgeries and explain surgical techniques piled up, my interest in drawing, especially por- traits, grew stronger. A typical portrait is started by drafting the general contour of the face and is followed by the eyes, the nose, and the mouth according to their proportion. To express the three-dimensional nature of a face and to give the model a vibrant sensation, the concave, convex, and indented features of the face are expressed considering the brightness of the specific parts of the face. The name of the game is experience and practice since a tiny difference can substantially change a person’s impression.
The same applies to plastic surgery. Before all else, the general contour and the proportion of the face are considered and are followed by the eyes, the nose, and the mouth, composing the details of a face. Plastic surgery is a profession of art, requiring both the profound medical foundations and the artistic touch that brings on the aesthetic features. This is why plastic surgeons that can operate on the whole face, rather than certain parts of it, are so rare.
The word “art” comes from the Latin ars, and ars derives from the Greek tékhnē (techne). They say that science and art were once a single unity. I can think of no better example than plastic surgery that sticks to this saying. My first priority is the safety of my patients. I promise to whole-heartedly consult, advise and operate on each and every one of my patients to obtain aesthetic and satisfying results while maintaining each person’s unicity by using academically proven techniques.
